The MSA@SIU hosted the Midwest Games 2008 which was attended by 800 participants and  had an organizing committee of 8 students . There were 13 sporting events held during the weekend and there were other events such as the opening ceremony, student forum, lunch buffet and Malaysian Night. There was tremendous support from the Malaysian government, Carbondale City officials and the administrators of the university along with their staff.
